‘Double Happiness’(囍): a Chinese character comprised of two single happiness’ (喜) aligned side by side; symbolising the joining of two individuals; commonly used in wedding paraphernalia as a blessing for a couple’s happily ever after

This collection brings together 7 Chinese artists – contemporary women investigating their place within a contemporary world; meditating on fleeting binds to engrained conventions and traditions; and reflecting on ‘囍’ beyond its ties to happiness and marital blessings. Through a queer and diasporic lens, ‘Double Happiness’ explores and challenges the notions of individuality within union, gender roles and societal expectations within kindred and romantic relationships.

‘Double Happiness’ presents a multidimensional take on cultural sensibilities; the traditions that bind us, the underlying webs of traditional ties, commanding us in how we feel, how we think – or more so, how we think we should feel and feel we should think; and our contemporary divergences.

(the moon represents) My heart - it's Amore

Dimensions variable (installation)

a dinner date dreamscape of a grown-up naïve little girl who only knows of romance as it relates to disney cliches, 8-bit relations, and her grandfather’s Teresa Teng CDs
Named after Teresa Teng's "The moon represents my heart" and the iconic "Lady and the Tramp" scene's serenade's internet counterpart: Dean Martin's "That's Amore",  the installation represents a naive understanding of romance and love as understood through a diasporic lens. Presented through Peranakan-esque tiles - a symbol of Eastern and Western amalgamations turned into a new identity, this work takes imagery from Chinese and Indonesian symbols of sexuality and longevity; icons of the Asian woman - dragon ladies and lotus blossoms; and references to the early 2000s digital age - durian minesweepers and learning love languages through tamagotchis.
